I feel like the older I get, the more weddings I’m getting invited to. Within the last year, I would have attended 3 weddings! That’s the most weddings I’ve ever been to in all my life. Honestly, weddings are a special time and I dream of the day when I’m able to have my own. But until then, there are different types of weddings that
But did you know that there are different types of weddings and you have to dress accordingly? Yeah, I would say that each wedding that I’ve been to this past year has been extremely different and I had to find different wedding outfits for each one.
That’s why I wanted to share with you guys the 5 questions I asked myself before picking out my wedding outfit. These questions helped me determine whether I was on the right track or not. Let’s check them out:
1. When is the wedding?
It’s important to ask yourself the timeframe of the wedding, meaning the month, date, time. This is because you want to determine whether to dress warm or to dress light depending on the season. Example, if it’s a summer wedding outside, you may want to opt for a linen suit versus a wool suit.
2. Where is it taking place?
Location is another factor to consider if you’re still thinking about what to wear. I went to Colombia for a wedding earlier this year and I didn’t know how the temperature would be. It was in the 70’s but the wedding was near sun down. The church as a bit hot as there wasn’t any A/C so the blazer I wore was a bit thick.
You can imagine how I was sweating in the church the entire time. But, outdoors was much cooler so it helped that I had it on after the wedding ceremony.
3. What type of wedding is it?
Most wedding invitations will have dress attire on them so you don’t have to figure what is necessary to wear. Most invites will say, “Black tie” which is wearing a black tuxedo for men and women wearing a elegant dress. Or it could be a semi-formal wedding where you can wear something more your style.
I went to a black tie wedding last year and I didn’t necessarily wear a tux. But, I did where a black suit which would suffice. I just wore a white button up shirt underneath without a tie and that was more than enough for me.
4. What colors should I avoid?
Obviously, you do not want to wear a white suit or a white dress to a wedding but most weddings have a wedding theme color and you’ll see the bridesmaids (and sometimes groomsmen) wearing them. My advice? I would find out from the bride or groom what the theme colors are and see if you are permitted to wear them or not.
5. Will my wedding outfit outshine the bride or groom?
So, this is something I learned the hard way. LOL. I wore a really nice Maje Sequin Blazer to my friends wedding and it was very glitzy and glam for Colombia. However, I felt like I overshadowed the groom! Definitely not my intention but I knew that all eyes were on me and I didn’t want that to happen again.
If you feel like your outfit is a bit “extra” and could outshine the groom or bride…well, then it most definitely will! I would respect the bride & groom and allow them to shine rather than be the center-of-attention. It’s their special day anyway so give them the floor to shine 🙂
I really hope that these questions will help with your decision to find an outfit for your next wedding! If you’re looking for great suits, I’ve provided some looks below that will be helpful for you:
