Who here loves to drink wine? *Waving my hand in the air* The cats out of the bag, I’m a total wino. I enjoy a glass or two (or even a bottle on some days) of wine and I don’t think I’ll ever stop. BUT, there’s one thing that would stop me from wine (red wine in particular)…and that’s sulfites.
Sulfites? What’s wrong with sulfites?
Well, let me tell you a little story. About two years ago, I was with my sister and cousin at an outdoor bar in NW Florida. I decided that I wanted to be “bougie” and drink wine. I asked for their Pinot Noir (a total fave), but they only had their house red wine so I decided to give it a try. Clearly, it was a big mistake (or rather a blessing) because the next morning my throat started feeling funny. Like, I felt like it was tightening like I was not able to swallow. Almost felt like strep throat.
Well, after a week of torture my throat starting to feel better and I started to ask myself, “What was it that I had that made my throat swell up?” This actually was not the first time it’s happened. It’s happened on previous occasions but did not put a finger on it until I realized that the only thing I drank that night at the bar was red wine.
Aha! I knew it had to be it because I always get a dry sensation in my throat if I drink a lot of red wine. I researched “wine allergies” and learned that some people are allergic to the sulfites in red wine. According to thekitchn.com, The term sulfites is an inclusive term for sulfur dioxide (SO2), a preservative that’s widely used in winemaking (and most food industries) for its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. SO2 plays an important role in preventing oxidization and maintaining a wine’s freshness.
For a very long time, I stopped drinking the red wine for fear that it would actually do me more harm than good. But one night, my friend invited me over to her house and she was telling me about this product called Üllo. I was like, “what does it do?” She mentioned that it filters out the sulfites in red wine and that it might actually be good that I try it out. I was a bit hesitant because I didn’t want to go through that pain again. Trust me, it’s torturous. But I took a leap of faith and decided to drink this filtered wine.
Surprisingly, it worked! I didn’t have any dry sensation or tightening in my throat. Plus, the hangover wasn’t even much of a hangover either (had two bottles each apparently >.<) Since then, I’ve used the Üllo when I go to my friends place and I decided to purchase it for myself. I couldn’t deprive myself of red wine anymore especially when I want to be like Olivia Pope and have my red wine and popcorn on stressful days. LOL.
I absolutely vouch for this product. From the packaging to the product…it looks super luxe. And it’s fairly affordable too. I bought mine at Best Buy for $70, but it retails for $79.95 (bought mine during Black Friday weekend for 10% off). The package came with the wine purifier and 4 filters to get you started. Each filter is good for 1 bottle of wine, which is 5 glasses. That’s pretty dope if you ask me!
